GST Council to meet again on 16 Jan as deadlock over dual control continues

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council on Wednesday decided to meet again on 16 January to iron out differences over the issue of dual control of assesses.

The two-day meeting of the council ended today with deadlock continuing over dual control between Centre and states and with it the Narendra Modi government’s 1 April deadline to rollout GST looking uncertain. Kerala finance minister Thomas Issac said that the GST rollout may not happen before September.

During the meeting, states bargained hard in the wake of demonetisation and using the situation to demand extra compensation to offset tax revenue losses.
